His Holiness Gajanan Maharaj, the 10th Jain Acharya, was born in 1906 at Kumbhalgarh. His true spiritual experience started on the day of Yama Samvat (the Jain calendar), when he first met his spiritual teacher, Pramukha Mahaprabhu. He grew up to be an outstanding scholar and poet in Sanskrit and Hindi language. Gajanan Maharaj wrote numerous books including Guru Charitra (Biography of Teachers), Khidr Charitra (Biography of Khidr), Riddhi Panchakam (a collection of fifty verses by five great poets which are taken from Vedas) etc. He also wrote a book on the life of Buddha, Jain Bhagwat Purva or Narayana Charitra. His unique writing style is described by his contemporary, Gorakhnath (1863-1937) in "Jiva-Charitra"(Biography of Self)). Gorakhnath writes:"Gajanan Maharaj was equal to Tulsidas in his love for God and God's devotees...He was never mischievous; nor was he ever negligent. He was very generous and always concerned about the needy." Gajanan Maharaj also composed a number of stotras and sankirtans and wrote hymns, including those dedicated to Neminath, Kadambar Nath, Parshvanath, Adinath and others. He is also known as the author of biographies of ten teachers (Gurus) like Jina (the Buddha), Samjna (Vardhaman Mahavir), Muni (Buddha's disciple), Kshetrigunya (Samkarshana Goswami), Patni Churiya (Kshetrnatha), Sarvavidhi (Vardhaman Mahavir) and Varuna. He composed the hymns that are sung today at Jain temples. His hymns to Jina (Buddha) and Kshetrnath (Mahavira) remain popular amongst the common people. There is a stanza in his "Neminath stotra" praising Jina as one who destroyed the evil and "whom we offer our prayers". He also composed numerous Kirtans in praise of Mahavir and others including Gorakhnath, Adinath and Parshvanath. One of Gajanan Maharaj's most well known compositions is "Khandarpa" meaning that which gives life to all beings. He composed "Khandarpa" in reply to a question posed by his friend Acharya Adishwarji Maharaj.
